It is with deep regret that the Benton County Historical Society announces the closing of the Benton County Museum.  Due to the structural integrity of the current building used for the Benton County Museum, and in the interest of public safety, and the safe keeping of our collection,  the Board of Directors voted to closed the museum until a new location can be acquired and our collection can be relocated.

In February 2009 BCHS contracted with the engineering firm of Norton & Schmidt from Kansas City, Missouri to determine the structural integrity of the old School House which was being used as the Benton County Museum.  It was determined that although the building did not appear to be in danger of immediate collapse, there was considerable deterioration of the masonery walls, both interior and exterior, due to water damage and that without major renovation to the roof, all masonery walls, and some of the supporting beams, that the integrity of the building would be compromised.

Our organization is dedicated to finding a new location, and reopening the museum as soon as possible. We are in the process of strengthing our organization, increasing our fundraising efforts and researching grants to assist us in acquiring a new location that will once again give us the opportunity to share our wonderful collection of Benton County, Missouri history.  We appreciate your understanding and support as we work toward a brighter future for our museum.  If you have ideas and/or suggestions you would like to offer, please download the 2009 Museum Survey on the home page.
