From Ionia to Fristoe and Cole Camp to Warsaw, Benton County is rich with history and people that contributed to the growth of Missouri. Our Society is dedicated to preserving that history so that present and future generations become aware of what the past produced and what the future may hold.

Over three dozen people were in attendance at the September 10th meeting of the Benton County Historical Society. Maggie Gilbert “Steamboat Granny” gave a very informative presentation on the history of steamboats on the Osage River the program also included information on Missouri River steamboats.
The monthly meeting began at 6 pm. Carter Kinkead opened the meeting, handling regular business. During the meeting Karen Henson, Museum Display Committee Chair; updated the group on the progress of rotating displays. There are displays in the Warsaw branch of the Boonslick Regional Library and also at the Warsaw Area Chamber of Commerce. Details are being finalized on the displays that will be located at City Hall in Lincoln and at the Cole Camp Museum in Cole Camp. Joy Burkhart, Fundraising Chair then updated the group on the upcoming fundraising event “A USO Tribute to Our American Heroes” which will be held on Saturday, November 7th at the American Legion located on Wildcat Drive. Tickets for the event will go on sale sometime in September $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The BCHS is expecting a sell out crowd. The event will include entertainment representing the various era’s of military conflicts. There will be a Silent “SWEET” Auction where items such as baked goods and candies will be available to bid on. There will be concessions featuring maid-rite sandwiches, chips and vintage snacks. Tickets are available at Country Market Antiques located at 230 W Main in Warsaw or by calling 660-723-1032. The monthly meeting then closed and the historic presentation began.
